The brief.

This commission shows Malenia at the moment the scarlet rot blooms. The figure is small against the composition on purpose: most of the statue is the rot itself, climbing from a gnarled trunk into two sweeping wings built from gold butterflies.

Finish & process.

Most of the painting is in the butterflies. Each one sits on a weathered, rust-brown ground so the gold reads as bloom rather than trim, and red rot streaks run through both wings and down the trunk. The skin keeps a soft, pale finish to contrast with the metal and rot, and the round plinth is trimmed in gold to match.
